Welcome to Bonaire

Bonaire is a small Dutch Caribbean island known as one of the world's premier dive destinations, with vibrant coral reefs accessible directly from the shore. The island has a relaxed pace of life, flamingo-filled salt flats, and some of the clearest skies in the Caribbean.

Getting around by car is the best way to explore. Bonaire has no traffic lights โ€” just open roads, dramatic coastlines, and plenty of wildlife crossing your path. A sturdy rental car gives you the freedom to discover every hidden corner of the island on your own schedule.

Road quality varies: major paved roads are generally good, but potholes are common and many areas are only accessible by dirt road. A reliable, well-maintained vehicle from Belle Car is the key to a safe and enjoyable island experience.

Traffic Rules on Bonaire

A new traffic law came into force on 1 August 2019, replacing regulations from 1957. Here's what you need to know.

๐Ÿš—

Drive on the Right

Bonaire follows right-hand traffic, just like the US or continental Europe. This makes it easy for most international visitors.

๐Ÿšฆ

No Traffic Lights

There is not a single traffic light on Bonaire. Intersections are governed by right-of-way rules and yield signs โ€” keep alert at every junction.

โšก

Speed Limits

40 km/h (25 mph) in urban areas ยท 60 km/h (37 mph) in rural areas. Police use radar traps, particularly on straight stretches like the road to Rincon.

๐Ÿ”„

Roundabouts

Traffic inside the roundabout has right of way. Vehicles entering must yield to those already circling โ€” this follows the international standard.

๐Ÿ“ต

No Phone While Driving

It is illegal to hold a mobile phone or tablet while driving. Use hands-free only.

๐Ÿบ

No Drink Driving

Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication is strictly prohibited and results in full personal liability for any damage.

๐Ÿช‘

Seatbelts Mandatory

All passengers must wear a seatbelt at all times. Children under 3 must be in an approved child seat.

๐Ÿช–

Helmets for Scooters

Drivers and passengers of scooters, motorcycles, and quad/ATVs must wear a safety helmet at all times.

Right of Way โ€” Important!

The main road going straight always has right of way. Traffic from the right does NOT automatically have priority (unlike the Dutch rule). At roundabouts, vehicles already inside have right of way โ€” yield when entering. Always drive defensively, especially at unmarked intersections on dirt roads.

Practical Driving Tips

Things they don't always tell you โ€” straight from island experience.

๐Ÿ

Watch for Animals

Donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens, and dogs freely roam the roads โ€” especially around sunrise and sunset. Reduce speed and wait until they have safely moved away.

๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ

Potholes & Rough Roads

Many paved roads have potholes and uneven surfaces. After rain, oil and rubber residue can make roads extremely slippery. Drive at a safe, reduced speed after rainfall.

๐Ÿ›ค๏ธ

Dirt Roads

There are many unpaved dirt roads on the island. Take extra care at junctions โ€” yield to traffic from the right. Only park-authorised vehicles may enter the National Park's rough tracks.

๐ŸŒ…

One-Way Streets

Kralendijk town centre has several one-way streets. The scenic coastal road heading north becomes one-way near the 1000 Steps dive site โ€” plan your route accordingly.

๐Ÿš›

Trucks & Loose Loads

Never try to overtake a moving truck in town. Outside town, beware of unsecured loads (gravel, sand) and rocks wedged between dual rear tyres.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ

After Rain

Roads become extremely slippery immediately after rainfall. Slow down and increase your following distance significantly.

๐ŸŒฟ Washington Slagbaai National Park

Visiting the National Park?

The Washington Slagbaai National Park covers the northern third of the island and is accessible via a rugged dirt road. Standard rental cars are generally not permitted inside the park due to the challenging terrain.

Drivers aged 25+ can borrow a Jeep Wrangler for one free day during their rental period.

Book in advance and collect at Kaya Industria 4a, subject to availability. Return with 20 litres of fuel.

Roadside assistance does not apply inside the park. Any tire or recovery costs are the renter's own responsibility.
